Eunice Funeral Home was established in 1946 by Eunice Benz Collins.
Eunice was born on August 14, 1911 to Granville Benz and Blanch Miller Benz in Seguin, Texas. As a young lady she had aspirations of being an entrepreneur and philanthropist in her community.
Ms. Eunice or Bubba as she was affectionately known, obtained her education at Guadalupe College. She was degreed and licensed in cosmetology, nursing as an LVN and a funeral director. Ms. Eunice operated a beauty shop, Eunice Funeral Home and Virley’s Nursing Home. She also operated an ambulance service.
Ms. Eunice was driven by helping people look good in life and death and offering reasonably priced funeral services to the community. As her businesses flourished, she began giving back to the community she served. She was well known for helping many receive their college degrees by subsidizing their tuition costs.
In the 1950’s she took her grandson, Elfreddie Lee Jr. under her wings. She began training him in the funeral service industry by allowing him to assist in bringing caskets to the homes of the deceased, as funeral services were typically held in the home of the decedent in those days. In 1966, after Bishop Elfreddie Lee Jr. graduated from Highland High School, Ms. Eunice helped finance his education at the University of Minnesota, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in mortuary science.
When Ms. Eunice became ill, her last wish was for her grandson to continue her legacy in the funeral business within the Seguin community. In 1981 Bubba passed away and Bishop Lee fulfilled her final wishes; in August 1981 Eunice Funeral Home became Eunice and Lee Mortuary.
We are the second and third generation owners of Eunice and Lee Mortuary and are dedicated to continuing Eunice’s great legacy of affordable service and love to the people of Seguin and surrounding communities.
